Starting in January 2024, Rainbow Phil will be offering Pre-Instrumental music classes on weekday afternoons. Some classes will be open to the public whereas some classes will be held in an after-school setting and only available to students of the school in which the classes take place.
Each class is;
- An hour long,
- Suitable for kids aged 3-5yrs (Jr/Sr Infants)
- Limited to just 8 kids per class (to keep things focused)
- Parents can either drop and go or stay and observe (for public classes)
However, I’m sure the big question will be…
What Even are Pre-instrumental music classes?
In Pre-Instrumental classes, the building blocks of music are playfully learned and explained through both familiar and new songs, interactive games and interactive demonstrations of a variety of instruments. All of these elements are combined to create a fun and inspiring environment. As I appreciate that each child’s concentration and coordination skills blossom at different paces, I endeavour, as always, to create an environment where they can learn in a way that suits each individual. Quite often, the children will learn without realising they are being taught!
My ultimate aim is to nurture a deep love for music in young children, before their hands are ready to play or hold an instrument.
The building blocks of music that I will concentrate on are:
- Beat/pulse
- Tempo
- Dynamics (loud/soft)
- Recognising and singing the major scale (particularly the first five notes)
- Developing singing skills
- Developing listening skills
- Playing together collaboratively (drum ensemble work)
- Sonic exploration

- Fridays 2pm, 3pm & 4pm – The Red Stables, St Annes Park (open to the public)

The Cost and how to book
The classes are booked by the half term (approx five week blocks) and the cost varies per location, depending on the cost of the use of the premises. Typically one class will cost between €12.50 and €15 per child with a five week term being a total of €62.50 to €75 per child.

The classes being held in Clongriffin Junction are open to everyone, but still limited to 8 kids per class per term – so please book early to secure your place!

Additional Needs
Children of all ages with additional needs are always welcome at all Rainbow Phil activities. These pre-instrumental classes are no different. While I’m no expert, I have built up a lot of experience working with children with Down Syndrome and Autistic children over the years. If you think your child would benefit from attending my classes then please contact me to let me know their particular needs before I meet them.
