Although as Rainbow Phil, I’ve been part of local children’s lives for the last few years, appearing at playgroups, playcentres and putting on shows for kids aged 0-6 (and grown ups of all ages!)
It’s only since the schools closed in March, that I’ve been using Facebook Live to keep in touch with the little ones and help keep them entertained. In fact since St Patrick’s Day I have performed on Facebook Live EVERY SINGLE MORNING, mainly inspired by Noreen’s comment from when I asked how often people would tune in…
So over the last 50 days, after spending many late nights watching YouTube tutorials on how best to live stream, investing in a green screen, learning how to get the most out of my equipment and software, realising I needed some proper lights and becoming a little more relaxed in front of the camera, the whole thing has evolved into a kind of live online kids TV show!
The response from the mums and dads has been great, they’ve really got on board with the whole thing, many of them making the show part of their daily lockdown routine!
Half way through April, I realised that I could use my platform to do some actual good. Inspired by friend Liam, a newly qualified nurse who found himself on a Covid19 isolation ward, I decided to do some fundraising. First for Feed The Heroes and then (on Liam’s advice) for The Beaumont Hospital Foundation. It turns out my viewers are super generous because we managed to raise over €2.5k for these charities through viewer donations!
All this from singing songs, reading stories and generally being a bit silly in front of my laptop in my kitchen every morning!
It’s been quite a learning curve but so much fun at the same time, I’m planning to keep going for as long as the restrictions are in place and probably beyond!
